Description:

This course will highlight important contemporary Kleinian and contemporary psychoanalytic concepts relevant to thinking about the closeness, relating and the sexual relationship of the couple. Separation and loss; primal scene and Oedipal dynamics will be explored. In addition, attention will be given to understanding how each of the partner’s psychic internal couple representations contribute and interact to form shared unconscious anxieties and fantasies about intercourse and creativity. These ideas will be used to help us think about how early life impacts triangular space and erotic life.

Pre-Requisites for Participation

It is an advanced course that requires participants to have a solid foundation in the basic principles and terminology of psychoanalytic theory and technique, as well as significant clinical experience.

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the theoretical basis for the concept of the creative couple.
  2. Identify and differentiate the immature and mature sexual relationship/love from a classical object relations point of view.
  3. Discuss Klein’s concept of the Oedipus complex and understand the theoretical implications for understanding the psychic life of the couple.
