ABSTRACT

As the wars in the Ukraine and Russia, Israel and Gaza rage on with thousands dying world wide from the ravages of war we will be exploring the impact on couples and families. Core beliefs about one’s alliances to one’s country, religion, and ideology trigger feelings of misguided loyalties, betrayal, and abandonment. Ruthless and tyrannical leaders tip their countries into an abyss.
What happens out there in the world is affecting couples and families. Clinically, I see partners sharing different points of view, their offspring impacted by the internet, peer pressure, and a general confusion of being overstimulated and overwhelmed by a wealth of information. Questions are being pondered, I.e. What is right? What is wrong? What is reality?  As clinicians, we will think about the impact of beliefs that become a threat within the couple and family system.
On April 5 we will discuss an article entitled ‘Curiosity vs beliefs : the battle for reality and what this means for relationships and development’ by Philip Stokoe.
Clinical vignettes to be presented are welcome.

Course Objectives:

1. Discuss the difference between beliefs, facts and certainty.
2. Explore the role of curiosity and psychic space to the development of self-reflection and the capacity to think
3. identify the impact of beliefs when they become a threat
