Description:
This workshop utilizes an object relations approach to treatment of narcissistic pathology in individuals and couples. Vivid material and practice theory will be presented that identify narcissistic features and their clinical challenge to the therapist. Holding and containment with narcissistically wounded individuals and couples will be demonstrated, and use of the therapist’s self examined through transference and countertransference analysis. We will explore therapist’s persistent narcissistic motives (benign to malignant) for understanding unconscious process in the dyad and triad. The concept of triadic mental space will be applied to the frame. Participants will be encouraged to offer case vignettes, comments and questions regarding work with narcissistic individuals and couples.
Pre-Requisites for Participation
It is an advanced course that requires participants to have a solid foundation in the basic principles and terminology of psychoanalytic theory and technique, as well as significant clinical experience.
At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the object relations of narcissistic-pathology with couples.
- Discuss parallel process that influences holding and containment in treating narcissistic couples.
- Explain clinical use of dyadic and triadic transference and countertransference.
