Description: This 3-hour workshop (3 CEUs) will explore a range of issues families face while living with a child with life-threatening illnesses, dying and the bereavement process including anticipatory mourning, preparing for the death, coping at the time of death and then throughout the course of the bereavement experience. The particular needs of siblings will be emphasized.

Stages of bereavement, the differential spectrum of issues facing family members, and the differences in work with individuals, families, and groups throughout various stages will be discussed. Family structure, and its implications on the process will also be explored.  Helping families to find meaning and the ability to reinvest in life after the death of a child, and issues emerging throughout the course of individual and family phases of development will be presented within relevant theoretical paradigms.

Participants will gain an expertise in the following areas:

– A sense of the changing family dynamics when a member is dying
– A developmental approach to understanding grief experienced by children and their family members
– The dynamics of the grieving process experienced by siblings and parents after the death of a child
– The use of developmentally appropriate activities and interventions in working with families who experience the death of a child
