Course Description:

Couples therapy involves complex treatment challenges and unique dynamic conflict.  Modern Kleinian therapy provides an in-depth object relational approach to understanding and working with couples in crisis.  Transference, counter-transference, enactments, projective identification cycles, and pathological compromise formations or retreats are examined as important elements of psychoanalytic technique with couples. Case material will be used to illustrate aspects of theory and clinical approach.

At the conclusion of this program, students will be able to :

1. Identify underlying dynamics that couples seek help with yet remain loyal to and how to interpret the internal phantasy that links the couple

2. Describe elements of the Modern Kleinian psychotherapy approach to couples treatment, both from a theoretical and clinical perspective

3. Explain the psychoanalytic method of working with transference, counter-transference, projective identification and anxiety states within a couples treatment setting
