The two clinical seminars will utilize participant’s case presentations to closely study the process of couple therapy, with the purpose of understanding the unconscious dynamics of couples that resonate in the therapist’s interventions. Attention will be paid to patterns of interaction in the couple relationship, shared defensive systems and shared unconscious fantasy. Particular attention will be paid to unconscious processes evidenced in the couple projective identifications and to transferences to the therapist.

Micro-Analysis of case process, participant’s associations, and countertransference will require that participants not ask questions of the presenter once the material has been offered. The presenter can comment during the discussion. This will be a working group that will study, respond and learn from countertransference experiences of the participants, that will provide a basis for considering questions of technique in practicing couple psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
